The Sam Houston Women’s Golf team finished up a successful week by winning the 2021 Southland Conference Women’s Golf Championship. This rigorous competition took place in El Dorado, Arkansas and had three hard rounds, but the Bearkats came out on top by shooting 917 over the three-day competition.
This is the second year in a row they have won the Southland Conference Tournament. The Bearkats won the competition by 19 strokes over the University of Central Arkansas.
Two players stood out in the teams winning performance in senior Hanna Alberto and freshman Jennifer Herbst, both winning individual medalist honors. Herbst was at the top of the leaderboard at the end of Monday and Tuesday as Alberto was right behind by eight shots.
Alberto’s birdie of the day came on hole No. 14 at the end of the day Tuesday. Herbst parred the 18th hole to earn a share of the title with Alberto. Both Herbst and Alberto had scores of 224 at the end of the tournament.
The Bearkats team finished with a score of 917, while second place Central Arkansas finished with a score of 936. Third place was Houston Baptist University with a score of 963, fourth place was Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi with 983. and last place was Stephen F. Austin State University with a score of 1,094.
This is Sam Houston’s fourth conference title and second consecutive team championship. The Bearkats Women’s Golf team will play the Baton Rogue Regional after earning the bid and will compete staring May 10.
