MONROE, LA- The Sam Houston Bearkats got back into the win column Wednesday night with a dominating 79-53 win over the University of Louisiana Monroe Warhawks.
The Bearkats (8-2,0-0) were led by sophomore transfer forward Cameron Huefner. He was making his first start as a Bearkat.
The Australian went on to score 18 points with four of the team’s 12 3-pointers.
The total for Sam Houston was the most it made in a game this season as the Warhawks (3-8,0-0) could not find an answer after only being down 31-26 at halftime.
The Bearkats would outscore ULM 48-27 in the second half and it was full sail ahead to victory.
Rebounding was an integral part of the Bearkats success as they outrebounded the Warhawks 41 to 19.
Although it was a poor shooting night for senior transfer guard Qua Grant, he filled up the stat line.
Grant finished with five points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and two steals.
Senior forward Donte Powers continued his scoring success with 12 points.
Despite not scoring any points, senior guard Javion May stole the show with an emphatic block late in the game.
May as well call him a walking highlight reel because he seems to always make a play that is Sportscenter Top 10 material.
He finished with eight rebounds.
Junior guard Jaden Ray and sophomore transfer guard Lamar Wilkerson came off the bench and each scored 11 points.
Ray also had five assists.
Sam Houston will look to get back on a win streak as they head down to San Marcos, Texas, to face old rivals Texas State Bobcats (6-5, 0-0).
Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and on the radio on 101.7 KSAM.
