The Sam Houston State Bearkats won their final regular season game on Saturday night, defeating the New Mexico State Aggies 76-69. This marks back-to-back wins for the Bearkats, who finished 6-12 in conference play with an overall record of 13-18.
After the game the Bearkats recognized seven seniors—Kalifa Sahko, Cameron Huefner, Josiah Hammons, Marcus Boykin, Brennen Burns, Lamar Wilkerson and Damon Nicholas Jr.—for senior night.
The Bearkats led at halftime with a score of 45-38. The Aggies put a little pressure on the Bearkats towards the end of the game, but Sam Houston fought back and was able to get the win.
“We made winning plays” Sam Houston head coach Chris Mudge said. “This is something we’ve been doing more recently which has helped us win five out of seven and even be right there with Middle Tennessee on the road at their place. We made some key stops and made some big shots, which is what winners do, and our guys have really bought in on what it takes to win and I love that they’ve stepped up and put those in action.”
Lamar Wilkerson led the way for the Bearkats with a career-high 32 points. Marcus Boykin added 18 points, while Josiah Hammons finished 15 points.
Robert Carpenter scored a team-high 20 points for the Aggies. The Bearkats shot 46.4% from the field, while the Aggies shot 40%
Sam Houston will play UTEP on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in Huntsville, Alabama for their first game in the Conference USA tournament. ESPN+ will carry the broadcast.
