Student move-in has begun, marking the start of Sam Houston State University’s Freshman Welcome initiative, Bearkat Kickoff.
The Department of Campus Activities and Involvement hosted the new student move-in volunteer event. This event provided current Bearkats with an opportunity to lend a helping hand to incoming students as they moved into their dorms.
Breeanna Dotson, the director of Campus Activities and Involvement, was shocked by the number of Bearkats willing to help with this event.
“I was blown away by the number of faculty and staff and departments who registered to volunteer … it’s [an] amazing turnout,” Dotson said.
On the first day of the event, new students were greeted by over 30 organizations and 50 departments at the residence halls, all ready to help them move boxes and welcome them to campus.
Incoming freshman, Kylah Currie, moved into Lone Star Hall with her family’s help. However, that didn’t stop Bearkats from offering her help.
“Everyone has been so welcoming,” Currie said. “We’ve had staff that come and help us, and everyone’s just been so happy for me to be here.”
After students are moved in, they will join their designated colleges on Friday at New Student Convocation, hosted by the First-Year Experience office. Convocation serves as a ceremony commemorating the beginning of a new student’s academic journey, with commencement serving as the finish.
