Food plays a significant role in student life at Sam Houston State University, whether it’s a quick bite between classes or a weekend hangout with friends.
From local diners to popular fast-food joints, Bearkats have ample options to satisfy their cravings, though it seems Sam Houston State students have a certain soft spot for fried chicken. Opinions vary when it comes to the best burgers in town, but for Katherine Werth, an SHSU alumni and Huntsville resident for the past four years, the choice is a no-brainer.
“Humphrey’s is the perfect place to unwind after a long week of classes,” Werth said. “The burgers are amazing, and the atmosphere is fun.”
While Humphrey’s Bar and Grill is a top choice for students to relax near campus, it is far from the only option in town. SHSU students have numerous different businesses to choose from.

Although the options for where to eat in Huntsville vary, one spot stands out as a favorite among Sam Houston State students: Raising Canes. According to a survey of 43 students, Raising Canes received the highest number of votes with 13.
El Gordo Taqueria has become a favorite for authentic Mexican food. Another popular establishment is Yummy Yummy, a local Asian restaurant that students frequent.
With so many options in Huntsville, there’s no excuse to settle for the same old meal every time. Whether you’re in the mood for Raising Cane’s, a burger at Humphrey’s or something new from a local hidden gem, there’s always something worth trying.
