Chi Tau Epsilon, National Dance Honor Society, will host “Dances @ 8” April 9-10 in the Dance Theatre located in Academic Building 3. Each night will feature a variety of dance pieces that are produced and performed by students in the SHSU dance department.
“These shows are completely student led,” said Heather Cleavelin, vice president of Chi Tau Epsilon. “This is a chance for students to perform their talents and show what they can do.”
Each student involved in the show is responsible for picking the form of dance as well as music and choreography.
“Dances @ 8” will be one of the last performances of the semester for the dance department.
Cleavelin said both nights of the concert will feature modern dance, as well as jazz, hip-hop and lyrical pieces.
“Dances @ 8” begins at 8 p.m. Tickets for the student showcase are $5 and can be purchased in advance by calling the dance department. Tickets will also be available in AB3 on the night of the shows.
“Dances @ 8” is not only a chance for students to showcase their talents, but also to raise money for Chi Tau Epsilon.
Chi Tau Epsilon is an honorary dance society that consists of SHSU dance majors and minors. The organization is also open to anyone who has an interest in dance and maintains a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
According to Cleavelin, Chi Tau Epsilon is a community-oriented organization dedicated to promoting combined and individual interests in the achievements of the performing arts.
Members of the organization participate in community service programs such as Pet the Pets, Adopt a Highway and also volunteer with the Special Olympics.
Each semester Chi Tau Epsilon hosts “Dances @ 8” as a way to promote the talents of the individuals in the SHSU dance department.
Also coming up for the Department of Theatre and Dance is Dance Spectrum in which they will perform “Cinderella”. This performance will be held in the University Theatre Center Mainstage at 8 p.m. May 1-3.
