The Sam Houston State women’s softball team walked away with one victory from this past weekend’s series against Southwest Texas.
The second game of the series featured an old fashioned pitching duel. Aydrien Guajardo pitched six scoreless innings for SHSU, giving up just two hits and striking out four. Chrissy Dileo led the Bearkat offensive attack by going 1-3 with two runs batted in.
The Bearkats could only muster four hits for the game, with Sara Gatlin, Lauren Boone and April Bardwell all connecting. Rachel Atzenhoffer came in to relieve Guajardo in the seventh, and earned the save by retiring the side.
In the first game of the series on Saturday, the Bobcats downed the Kats 3-0. Despite only giving up three hits and striking out eight in seven innings of work, Atzenhoffer picked up the loss.
The Bearkats out hit SWT 5-3, but couldn’t bring anyone across the plate. Lynne Tousek, Melissa Cosgrove, Bardwell, Boone and Erin Lindsey all hit safely for the Kats.
The Sunday finale found the Kats on the losing end of a close game. The Bobcats rallied from a one run deficit in the fourth to go up 3-2. SWT added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, which proved to be the game winner.
The Bearkats made it a one run game by scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh, but ended up falling short 4-3.
Atzenhoffer went 4 2/3 innings in the loss and Whitney Heath and Guajardo each pitched and inning in relief. Boone went 2-3 from the plate, and Cosgrove, Dileo, Lindsey, and Gatlin each had a hit.
The Bearkats are now 8-6 in Southland conference play and 16-21 overall.
Next up for the Kats is a doubleheader on Wednesday at Prairie View A&M. The first game is scheduled for 5 p.m. and the second game at 7 p.m.
Sam Houston returns to conference play this weekend when they head to San Antonio for a three game series against UTSA.
