Rachel Atzenhoffer threw a complete game shutout against Southeastern Louisiana Saturday, helping the Bearkat softball team take its only game of the series this weekend.
The Bearkats won the first game of their Southland Conference doubleheader 4-0 in Hammond, La.
Southeastern Louisiana won the nightcap 6-2 and Sunday’s game 2-0. The Bearkats dropped to 6-14 for the season and 3-3 in league play.
Atzenhoffer, 3-4, struck out five and walked none in seven strong innings during Saturday’s first game. Infielders Erin Lindsey and Brittany Tuck collected two runs each for the Bearkats, who scored all their runs in the sixth inning of the first game.
Shortstop Lindsay Kaltwasser had two hits for the Bearkats.
SHSU lost the nightcap to the Lady Lions scoring only two runs in the first inning. April Bardwell and Lauren Boone scored those runs.
Southeastern Louisiana’s pitcher Michaela Roberts relieved starter Natalie Dunagan and threw six shutout innings.
SHSU starter Aydrien Guajardo gave up four runs in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Melissa Hayslip relieved Guajardo and pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up two hits and two runs. Whitney Heath closed the game holding the score at 6-2.
Atzenhoffer engaged in a pitching dual with Lady Lion starter Emily Stelly in Sunday’s game. Neither team threatened throughout the first four innings, as both Stelly and Atzenhoffer were in complete control.
SHSU made the first offensive threat, putting runners on second and third with two outs in the fifth inning. Senior outfielder Melissa Cosgrove hit a sharp line drive that popped out of the Southeastern third baseman’s glove, but the Lady Lions got the ball to the catcher in time to get Lindsay Kaltwasser out at home to close the inning.
The Bearkats threatened in the sixth inning as well, but were held by the Lady Lions preventing SHSU from breaking the scoreless tie.
Southeastern Louisiana picked up two runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 2-0 victory.
Junior infielder Lindsay Kaltwasser went two for three for SHSU. The Bearkats left seven runners stranded.
The Bearkats return to action in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday against Boston University in Huntsville at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
