Recently I had a run in with the UPD. I am 18-years-old, under the legal drinking age and I understand that when I drink, I take a risk of being caught. I am against drinking and driving; I do not let any of my friends drink and drive. Last Tuesday, I had been drinking at a friend’s apartment at UPA. I had a couple of beers and decided that I shouldn’t drive so I thought I could just walk back to my dorm. (It was a pretty night) I live in Kirkley Hall 127. I had already walked all the way back on campus. I was about 100 yards past Residence Life. I was walking on the sidewalk and I was talking on my cell phone–I wasn’t drunk. I wasn’t walking like I was drunk. And a police officer (UPD) drove up right behind me, about 2 a.m. He turned his lights on and I turned around. He got out of his car and walked up to me. He asked me if I had been drinking and I said, “a couple of beers.” He then gave an eye test and asked me if I had been drinking again. I told him the same thing. He then told me to put my hands behind my back, and I asked him why. He said, “You’re under arrest for PI.” I asked him why I couldn’t just get a ticket and go straight to my dorm room, which I pointed at. He said, “No, you’re going to jail.” I went to jail and they took away my cell phone. They told me I had one call. I didn’t know anyone’s number by heart except my dorm room, which no one answered. I asked for my cell phone to look up a friend’s number but was told no. I called my girlfriend, who drove two hours to come bail me out. When she got there, they told her she had to wait for a shift change, which would be another hour. We are in college; college kids are going to drink. Please, if I drive and drink, then arrest me, but who was I hurting walking on the sidewalk back? Why did I have to go to jail? I don’t have the money for that kind of ticket. The definition of a PI is a person that is drunk or had been drinking that is in danger to himself or to others. Why is UPD like that?
