Walt Disney is known for providing great thrill rides and entertainment, but the company also offers a lesser-known internship program to curious college students. For almost twenty years, the Walt Disney World College Program has been providing opportunities for college students around the country. On Oct. 23 at 6 p.m., SHSU students will have the opportunity to speak with a Walt Disney World recruiter in Dan Rather Communications Building Room 125.The internship program would provide students with a hands-on feel of what happens behind the scenes and experience what it is like to run a world-known resort. Students would be involved in a newly structured learning environment that caters and provides necessary information about working in the world of Disney. The program would also allow students the opportunity to meet other students participating in the program from colleges around the United States. Students would have the opportunity to participate in one of six specially Disney designed courses which include: Disney College Program Practicum, Disney Communications, Disney Hospitality Management Course, Disney Experimental Learning for the 21st Century, Disney Human Resource Management Course and Disney Organizational Leadership. Knowledge gained from these courses will be instrumental to students in the program.Students can expect to gain real-world experience through jobs in different departments including: attractions, culinary, custodial, food and beverage, hospitality, housekeeping, lifeguarding and others. Also, through working, students will have the chance to network with company leaders throughout the Walt Disney Corp.Students involved in the program will be housed in furnished apartments with one to four rooms, and will be provided with transportation to and from work. Fees such as rent and utilities will be automatically deducted from the students’ paychecks each week. While the American Council on Education has recommended students receive credit for the courses, students are advised to speak with a their advisor on whether or not the classes will count for SHSU credit.Any students interested in the Walt Disney World Program must attend the meeting on Oct. 23. The program is open to all undergraduate students who have attended at least one semester of school. For further information, visit the Web site at www.wdwcollegeprogram.com or call 1-800-722-2930.
