The Department of Student Activities, the SHSU Cheerleaders and the Orange Pride Dance Team will be hosting Firefest on Thursday at 8 p.m. Firefest, spirit activities in preparation for the Stephen F. Austin game, will be held on the intramural field near Bowers’ Stadium.During the first hour of Firefest, fans will be able to bash a car, participate in an inflatable obstacle course, moonwalk, bungee-run and sumo-wrestle. Students will also be able to watch the burning of the Lumberjack, a bonfire symbolizing SFA, said Allyson Ramsey, a captain of Orange Pride Dance Team.Around 9 p.m., Kat Kall, a pep rally, begins, said Ramsey. Performances by the SHSU Cheerleading Squad, SHSU Band and Orange Pride Dance Team will be held. Sammy and Samantha, the SHSU mascots, will perform a skit with the SHSU Football team.”A fireworks display is scheduled for about 9:30 p.m.; it will last about five minutes,” said Ramsey. “After that, everyone is free to go and have a good time”.”I am going to Firefest because SFA is our rival. We need to show team spirit,” said Arnoldo Barrera, senior criminal justice major.”My frat, Omega Psi Phi, is going out there to show that we support our school,” said Curly Cepeda, senior industrial technology major.Firefest is one of several activities that comprise the week of Operation Orange, which is designed to raise school spirit, said Jared King, a captain of the SHSU Cheerleading Squad. “Firefest is a long standing tradition,” said King.The Department of Student Activities will pass out free T-shirts and other giveaways during Firefest. SHSU fans can eat free hamburgers provided by Bennigan’s. About 500 people are expected to participate.
