SHSU’s Baptist Student Ministry holds several weekly events for interested students.”We have a luncheon every Monday and Wednesday,” said Jeff Kennon, director of the BSM. The luncheon is free the first time a student attends and $1 after that, he said. Kennon said the money goes to support the summer mission trips. Kennon said the student-led organization is not just for people who are Baptist. The entire campus is invited to its events. The BSM also holds Journey every Thursday night from 7 p.m. to about 8:30 p.m. or 9 p.m., he said. “Journey is a bible study and worship time,” said Kennon. A student-led band The Praise Team provides music for the weekly event. The organization has about 10-12 small groups, comprised of about 5 students each, that meet at various times and places. Kennon said some of the groups meet in students’ houses, apartments and dorm rooms. “We are continuing to create more small groups,” said Kennon. He also said about 100 people attend the luncheon and around 100 also attend Journey on Thursday nights. “In some ways, we exist for those who aren’t here. We want to reach out to all different types of people on campus,” said Kennon. Kennon has been the director of the BSM for about 3 months and said he is excited about beginning new projects and the things that are ahead. He said people could come to the BSM just about any time of the day for more information. The BSM opens at about 9 a.m. and the only time it closes is on Wednesday evenings when students are encouraged to attend church services throughout the community. “The BSM is a place where people can come to feel welcomed, loved and encouraged,” said Jon Ellis, member of the leadership committee for the BSM.Ellis also said the organization is “not about being religious. It’s just about loving one another and loving Christ.”For more information, contact the BSM at 245-2962 or visit the Web site at www.shsu.edu/~org_bsm/.
