Mr. (or is it Ms.?) Bottos: Since the beginning of the school year, you have filed four stories in The Houstonian about clubs in Huntsville and the various activities surrounding them…or five if you count the story about the band Get Tainted. I attended SHSU in the late 70s and still lecture there often to journalism and radio/tv students. I would like to suggest that you spend a little time doing more ‘hard’ news for The Houstonian. The stories that you’ve done for The Houstonian are simplistic and elementary. I would expect more from a communications/journalism major at SHSU. How difficult is it to write about clubs like Paragon and Quarters? Plus, these stories smack of being advertisements instead of news stories. In one of your more ‘in depth’ stories this year about the Career Expo, you complained (a common theme in your stories that are NOT about Huntsville’s nightlife) about there not being any reps from larger companies that might be interested in a communications major. If you are serious about going into journalism, the stories that you’ve filed this year are not the kind of clips that I would want to read if I were considering you for a position at my newspaper or magazine. I think you’ve got the talent and ability to report on more ‘in depth’ stories than fluff pieces on Paragon and Quarters and their respective ladies nights or drink specials. Since you seem to spend a good amount of time patronizing the clubs, how about a piece on drinking and driving? It’s a message that never gets old. Before the year is over, there will be a DWI-related death at SHSU. Perhaps an ‘in depth’ article by you could help prevent such a tragedy from happening. Also, the incident at Paragon in which the Huntsville Police Department allegedly treated students and other patrons rudely should be reported to the department’s internal affairs division. Such actions should not be tolerated and if those officers are found to be in violation of department rules and regulations then they should be dealt with by their supervisors. You also mentioned the Houston Police Department’s incident at K-Mart (in passing) in this piece. Please remember that the actions of a minority of officers in any department – be it the Huntsville Police or the Houston Police – should not reflect on the entire department. There are good officers and bad officers. Just like there are good journalists and bad journalists. It’s the public’s job to report the bad ones to the authorities so that they can be dealt with properly. I look forward to reading better and more ‘in depth’ articles from you in future editions of The Houstonian online.
