I just wanted to express my discust for the column “Tips on how to make ‘friends with benefits” work.” All this article suggested was using others for your own benefit without caring how your actions would affect your “friend”.
The article also started out by saying that friends with benefits is a good thing for college students today. Wasn’t there just an article in the paper commenting on how Sam students did have STDs? Perhaps not as many as rumored, but of course that wouldn’t be possible since it seems the rumor says that ALL SHSU students have STDs. Plus, not everyone who has an STD is going to go to the student health center; even if they do go, how many of them do you think actually admit to having an STD? Tons of people having sex with multiple partners is part of the reason there has been such a large amount of STDs floating around.
Now I would like to get back to the caring only about yourself part of the article. This method teaches people to blame their problems in relationships (and life in general), on other people. An example of this is their sentence, “If things fall through it was the other person’s fault.” So what does this tell you? If the other person starts to care for you because you are having sex with them, something that is a very intamate part of peoples lives, then it is their fault for screwing it up? The article also fails to mention that if you do decide to have a friends with benefits relationship that the other person involved ought to know and agree to the terms. This column just suggests using this person and blowing them off when they read your signs of affection as actually caring for them, not just wanting to use their bodies for your own good and not give a rats *ahem* butt about how they feel. One way or another, someone will end up getting hurt. Perhaps their last sentence really should have been “Remember: Don’t leave until you have used someone, made them think you like them, and made sure that you will have them around until you decide to break their heart when you find someone cuter to start this endless evil cycle with.”
