Dr. Genevieve Brown has been promoted to dean of the College of Education and Applied Science effective Jan. 16, 2003.Brown has served as acting dean of the College of Education and Applied Science this semester. Her promotion follows a period considered unstable by university officials in which five deans or acting deans have passed through the college in only two years.David Payne, vice president for Academic Affairs, said since Brown stepped in as the college’s acting dean, she has been able to provide strong and experienced leadership. This leadership was desperately needed after the college recently came under fire from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. As the oldest teacher training institution in the Southwest, SHSU had achieved accreditation for its teacher education programs every year since 1957. Last year however, the college took a hit when the NCATE accredited it with probation.Payne said after consulting with chairs of the College of Education and Applied Science and other university deans, he felt promoting Brown from acting dean would return needed stability to the university’s education program.”I believe this will provide the continuity necessary for us to take the next step in the process of the college while continuing with leadership experienced in meeting the NCATE accreditation standards,” Payne said. SHSU and the college are now in the process of preparing for its next on-site review to take place in fall 2003. The goal for the college is to earn back NCATE accreditation.Brown said she is honored to have received her new position, and the opportunity to continue working for a university she loves.”SHSU has become very dear to me,” she said. “I appreciate so much Sam Houston’s fine administrators, faculty, staff, students and alumni. All of these groups have made my experiences here enjoyable and rewarding.”Brown attended East Texas State University where she received her bachelor’s degree and later her doctorate in 1979.She has been part of the SHSU community since 1984. Prior to her role as acting dean, she served as a professor of education, coordinator of secondary education and chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling.Brown also played a pivotal role in establishing the first doctoral program for the College of Education and Applied Science in 1997.With her new position as dean, Brown said she looks forward to the chance to further improve the college she will lead, as well as the university as a whole.”The future of SHSU has never looked brighter,” she said. “I look forward to the opportunities I will have as the dean of the College of Education and Applied Science to be a contributor to the president’s initiatives and to the team effort that will bring a great university to an even higher level.”
