Program Council will have free Mexican food in the Lowman Student Center atrium today at noon.”It is free food for any student who wants to come out. It is in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15,” said Rachel Young, vice president of public relations for Program Council.Local Mexican restaurants, including Fiesta Taqueria and Casa Tomas, will provide food, as well as food from Aramark, said Courtney Herron, Hispanic Heritage Month chair. Gift certificates from Jose’s Mexican Restaurant will be given away at the event”We want to invite any Hispanic or intercultural organization to come out and pass out information about their organization,” said Young.”I’m excited to see Program Council sponsoring programs that expose the student community to the diversity that is found here at SHSU,” said Jessica Alexander, junior journalism-public relations major.”I think that’s a good idea. That’s a good way to promote the organization,” said Charlene Venhuizen, junior radio-television/public relations major. Students interested in Hispanic Heritage Month or those who have ideas for events can attend the Hispanic Heritage Committee meeting, which meets every Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m. in LSC Room 331.Future events for Hispanic Heritage Month include a musical duo named Calle Sur in the Mall Area at noon on Oct. 1.On Oct. 9, PC will host a movie marathon in the theater. “Stand and Deliver”, “Bound by Honor” and “La Bamba” will show at noon, 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. Also, on Oct. 15, the organization will host the third annual Salsa Explosion, said Herron. A group of professional dancers, called Strictly Sweet Salsa, will perform and teach students how to salsa dance at 7 p.m. in the LSC Ballroom.
