SHSU students are employed in many on-campus jobs, one of which is a computer lab assistant, the people who are continuously out of their seats helping computer users. Academic Building I computer lab is a bolstering environment of SHSU computer users. At peak hours, students stand around and wait for an open computer. Once seated, with the wave of a brightly colored help sign, lab assistants are summoned, ready to help.Collectively, the job of being a lab assistant is a satisfying task. It’s the users who just do not listen sometime, said lab assistants Esteban Sanchez and JoAnna Sahwani. “Co-workers are great. It’s the users; I wish they would listen,” said Sanchez.Lab assistants are trained how to maintain the computer lab, how to care for the printers and the basic functions of personal computers and Macintoshes. Along with these tasks there is a needed ability of people skills when working with the many computer users. Overall both Sahwani and Sanchez say users attitudes are not the worst thing. When confronted with an irate user, “I just smile and nod,” said Sahwani. The majority of ABI computer lab users are students, with very few professors. Sahwani said professors usually use their office computers.”They (professors) don’t come around that much,” said Sahwani.Among the lab assistants, there are stories to tell. “I had somebody tell me their cup holder wasn’t working,” said Sahwani, as she reached to eject a nearby compact disk drive. The most of Sahwani’s troubles is those students who seem to forget that computer lab is a drink and food free zone.”A lot of times its just people who want to eat and drink in the lab,” said Sahwani. For computer users in any building, there is one important task that will save the lab assistants time and energy that can be redirected to help the users.”We spend quite a bit of time pushing in the chairs,” said Sanchez.Richard Abril, a new face in the computer lab, has been working as a lab assistant since August.”It seems that people don’t read,” said Abril, of the brightly written food-prohibiting signs displayed throughout the computer labs, echoing his co-workers complaint. For Abril, even that is not a huge problem. He said that if it was not a rule, he would not mind the eating and drinking, but it is his job to make sure it does not happen.”I actually enjoy my job. I just get frustrated when I can’t actually help people all the time because I don’t want them to think that we really don’t know anything, and we do try to learn everything,” said Abril.”You run into the occasional users that’s just like you can’t help (them) and they kind of get upset, but you just have to brush it off, and just kind of kill them with kindness,” said Abril. Jessica Gallow has been working in the computer lab for several weeks and said she enjoys her job. “I love being a lab assistant,” said Gallow. Although lab assistants are available for help, some students do not take advantage of the offered help.”I don’t ever need a lab assistant,” said junior Taylene Blake.Overall, students believe the lab assistants do a good job.”I’ve needed a lab assistance a few times, with help with printing out stuff, and they (the lab assistants) were really helpful,” said freshman Kenneth Call.”They’re pretty sophisticated,” said sophomore Uralisa Mills. “They know what they are doing.”
