One of the middle pages of the Texas Monthly September issue is home to a full-page Sam Houston State University advertisement. The ad was a team design created by a variety of people, said Paula Vernick, assistant to the president of special projects. The ad, which can also be seen on the Internet on Today At Sam, was created because of the Texas Monthly issue featuring Houston, said Vernick. She said the team tried to convey a strong affiliation with Houston by using pictures of the Sam Houston statue and Austin Hall, as well as the Houston skyline.”I really feel the advertisement will do good things for SHSU. The ad is interesting, colorful and will sure bring positive publicity to the university,” said Jessica Alexander, a senior public relations major.”I think the ad will bring a high population from the area of Houston to our campus,” said Jessica Starlin, a sophomore criminal justice major. Starlin also said advertising helped her in her decision to come to SHSU.The print as joins the Sam Houston billboard, located in The Woodlands at I-45 and Rayford Sawdust Road, in publicizing SHSU’s name in the area. The billboard has been on display for about four months and is scheduled for removal in November, said Vernick. The team is in the process of negotiating with companies to have a series of new billboards constructed between the Houston and Dallas areas, hopefully by the time the billboard in The Woodlands will be coming down, Vernick said. The team monitors responses from the billboard by SHSU’s toll-free phone number, which is printed on the sign.”We have a person who saw the number on the billboard call everyday. It’s amazing,” said Vernick.
