The SHSU dance department is hosting a gala at the University Theater Center Sept. 14 in hopes of raising $30,000 in scholarship funds.The gala was established in order to raise money for musical, musical theater and dance student scholarships.The gala theme is “It’s Showtime. Celebrate the American Spirit”.The program will feature U.S.O.- type shows, as they were during the World War II era, according to Penny Hasekoester, the coordinator. The performances will take patrons back to the World War II era with songs such as “New York, New York” and “Give My Regards to Broadway”.The gala will also feature cabaret singers in the lobby and on the main stage. Student greeters will provide guidance for patrons. Food will also be offered.The gala will have a live auction and a silent auction. ” Over 100 different items are available for bidding,” said Hasekoester. Items to be auctioned include a condo for seven days anywhere in the world, locally handmade quilts, jewelry, artwork, two hours of limousine service, golf packages, gift certificates, season tickets to Houston theater shows and Astro tickets.The gala will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. The show begins at 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at the door.
