For years, I have complained about how poor the support of athletics is at Sam Houston State. This Saturday is the time to prove me wrong. The couch potato section will most likely be 500 strong and the band will fill a quality section of the home seats, but having an otherwise empty stadium would be embarrassing for the school. If Sports Illustrated comes to take pictures of the couch potato section, and a significant portion of Bowers Stadium is empty, SHSU will probably be left on the cutting room floor when the magazine starts choosing pictures for their college fans section. The Kats hit a few snags in their season opener; this weekend they will have an opportunity to fix their week one problems. Last season, the Kats played Division II Tarleton State and beat the eventual Lone Star Conference Southern champions 61-10. Midwestern State finished with a 7-4 record and was the North champion. There is, however, no guarantee the Kats will roll over Midwestern State this year in a repeat performance of last year against Tarleton.Last week the Indians had a strong performance against Southern Arkansas and, like any team in the country, is not going to give up before the game is played. Most teams, when coming to Huntsville to take on the Kats, do not take into consideration how they will deal with crowd noise. As the couch potatoes and large crowd at last years Stephen F. Austin game proved, a difference can be made.True, the Kats are playing a D-II team this weekend; don’t let that keep you from the game. Just like any football game, nothing is decided until the two teams take the field. The football team could use some noise from all areas of the stadium Saturday night. Just because you aren’t in the couch potato section doesn’t mean you can’t make a difference.
