“I am a business man first and foremost,” said Student Government Association presidential candidate Derek Buster. “I will make sure the students have a voice.”Buster, who is running for every SGA officer position, said he wants to restore confidence in the SGA.”I had concerns with the current SGA,” Buster said, “that most people on campus weren’t being heard. I decided to announce my candidacy to see if the student body felt the same way I didI am running for all offices kind of as a ploy to see what students think about the current administration.”Though Buster has no SGA experience, he said that should have no effect on the election.”Most students aren’t in SGA,” he said, “and I am a student. SGA experience doesn’t seem that important.”Buster also said since deciding to run for office, he has thoroughly researched SGA. “I found out what each person’s job is and what they should do,” he said. “I’ve looked at their minutes and have seen what they discussed.”Buster, an active participant in non-profit organizations, said one thing he wants to do is have more organized meetings. “The one SGA meeting I did attend was very disorganized,” he said. “It wasn’t run like a student government but a free for all.”He also said he wants to make sure rules get followed.”Like this whole election committee,” he said. “They extended the deadline to apply for candidacy. The rules say the only way the deadline can be extended is if an applicant withdraws a bid. Every student has to follow rules. It is unfair that SGA breaks theirs. They should have consulted people.”Buster feels the last administration did not ask students about issues.”SGA voted on fees and didn’t listen to students,” he said. “Every student should have the opportunity to speak. I didn’t even know they were voting on it.”Buster admits he has not been very active on campus. However, he was recently elected president of the Society of Physics Students and after talking to members decided he had concerns with the current SGA.”I believe the current president seems like a lame duck president,” Buster said. “His participation is narrow, he focuses only on a certain few while the rest get ignored.”Buster said SGA is supposed to be the voice of students to the administration.”I work in a very small department with only about 40 majors,” he said. “We are a minority, but we have needs as well. I am sure there are other students who feel the same way.”Buster, a senior who has attended SHSU on and off since 1995, will graduate in December with a physics degree and will graduate next May with a degree in mathematics. Buster has worked at kids’ camps and performed other volunteer work. He said he wants to restore confidence in SGA.”I want the students to know we can make intelligent decisions, such as where money gets spent,” he said. “Fifty percent of the student service fees go to athletics. Maybe that was the wrong fee to increase.”Buster said he will speak for the students.”I feel like I can do the job,” he said. “You’ll have student who actually cares about your voice.”
