The baseball team snapped its five-game losing streak Friday afternoon with an 8-0 victory over the Louisiana Monroe Indians. However, the Kats were not able to build any momentum off of Friday’s win, dropping the weekend series 2-1.Sophomore pitcher Ryan Herrera threw a complete game three-hitter, striking out four Indians to lead the Kats. The win snapped the Kats five- game losing streak and ended a nine-game winning streak for Monroe. Herrera received Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for his performance.Catcher Buck Riva, second baseman Phillip Weaver and right fielder Jeremy Locke each had two hits to lead the offense for SHSU. The Kats picked up 10 hits in the game, including a triple by Weaver and a double by third baseman Lou Ferrell.Saturday, the roles were reversed as the Indians picked up 12 hits in a 6-2 victory.Monroe was led by first baseman Ted Whit, who went 3-5 with a home run, while right fielder Jared Doty picked up two doubles.Jordan Tata (3-6) took the loss for the Kats, giving up nine hits and four runs in four innings of work.On Sunday, Monroe continued their hot hitting, picking up eight runs on 12 hits en route to an 8-2 victory. The Kats picked took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a lead-off home run by Riva, but the Indians answered in the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run by shortstop Andy Chance.”Monroe is a good team, and we knew two runs wasn’t going to do it,” said Riva, who had two hits in the game. “We knew after we took the lead we needed to put more runs on them. Unfortunately, we didn’t.”Senior Jeff Vanlandingham (4-6) took the loss for the Kats, giving up four earned runs on six hits in six innings of work.”I got a couple of quick innings in, and I was just trying to keep us in it,” Vanlandingham said. “I felt like I did that, for the most part, until that last inning. We made a mental mistake trying to get that guy out at third base, but things like that happen.”Sunday’s loss dropped SHSU to eighth place in the Southland Conference with a 6-12 mark, putting their chances of reaching the conference tournament in further jeopardy.”There’s a lot of baseball left,” Riva said. “We’re still in it, but we can’t get swept. We’ve got to take the next three series for us to have a chance at the conference tournament. We know how we can play and what our potential is. We’re a little in and out of it right now, but we know how we can play. Once we find it, like we did after the first three weeks of the season, I think it will come back to it.”The Kats will be in action today against the Houston Baptist University Huskies at 3 p.m. and will take on the University of Houston Cougars at 7 p.m. at Cougar field Wednesday.
