Founded in 1971, the Soul Lifters Gospel Choir is celebrating its 31st Anniversary this week. The theme for the week is “Willing And Ready.” According to Shunta Heath, member of Soul Lifters, the organization chose that theme because they said they are soldiers on the battlefield, fighting for the lord.This week Soul Lifters will host various events. Today, Soul Lifters will be hosting “Soul Food Bible Study” at the Baptist Student Ministry at 5 p.m.Also tonight at 7 p.m., there will be a Gospel Explosion in the Old Main Pit. “A lot of students around campus will be performing at the event,” Heath said. “There will be praise dancing, poetry, motivational speaking, and of course singing.” Free food will be available.Wednesday morning, Soul Lifters will serve cake in the mall area at 11:50 a.m. and Thursday afternoon they will hold a choir rehearsal for members only.The Soul Lifters Mingle will be held Friday night. According to Heath, this is a time for past and present members of Soul Lifters to reunite and have a good time. Only the current members and alumni of Soul Lifters will be allowed to attend.Saturday hosts the final events for Soul Lifters Anniversary Week. Beginning Saturday morning at 9 a.m., there will be a continental breakfast served in the BSM. After breakfast, Soul Lifters will host a variety of workshops in AB1 from 9:45 a.m. noon. “There will be speakers and students from various Texas schools,” Heath said. “Lamar, Stephen F. Austin, University of University, Texas Southern University are some of the schools that will be here to help us celebrate.”Lunch will also be served at the BSM on Saturday.Saturday night there will be another gospel event held at Elkins Lake Baptist Church at 6:30 p.m. Heath said everyone should come out and enjoy themselves at all of Soul Lifters’ events. “This is an opportunity for people all denominations to worship the best way they feel comfortable and have a good time doing it,” Heath said.
