The spectacular performances of Joe Amburn and Jennifer Engelbrink at the Texas A&M Relays put last week’s mediocre meet behind the track team. Both runners set school records in their events this weekend.Engelbrink ran 3:54.58 to place first in the women’s 1,500-meter, while Amburn ran a personal best of 3:53.25, placing third in the 1,500-meter. “Jennifer ran just a great, great race. She looked strong the whole time and was still coming on strong at the end,” head coach Greg Hinze said. “I said earlier this year that if she doesn’t break the school record, then I had done a poor job with her.”Vance Bridges finished second in the 1,500-meter, running a season and personal best time of 4:01.58. Courtney Boston continued with a season best 21.27 in the 200-meter for seventh place. “What else can you say about Courtney Boston.I wish I had five more just like him; the guy is just a competitor,” Hinze said. The 4×400-meter relay team of Brad Buegeler, Adrian Ray, Paul Murphy and Byron Northrup placed third in 3:15.93.Ray had a season best 54.69 in the 400-meter hurdles, placing sixth.Randy Flach won the pole vault with a season best height of 16-00.75, and Brian Smith placed fifth with 15-1. “If he had been on the right pole, there is no doubt in my mind that he could have cleared 16-7 and maybe more,” Hinze said. Clint Gallagher threw 52-4.75 in the shot put to capture third, with Caleb Seal behind him in seventh with 49-1. Gallagher also placed seventh in the discus with a throw of 152-10, his personal best, and Seal placed eighth with 152-6.For the women, Precious Madison continued to shine, placing first in the long jump with 19-10.75, fourth in the 100-meter with 11.69 and ninth in the 200-meter with 24.28, both season best times. “Precious is starting to realize that this is it for her,” Hinze said. “I would have liked to see her in there with the Texas and TCU girls, but this should give her a lot of confidence that she can run fast.”Casey Jones placed third in the Steeplechase with a time of 12:04.47. Tenika Powell threw the shot for 44-4, capturing first place, with Shandra Haynes in second at 43-1.75, and Stacy Nicholson in fifth at 40-9.75.”Our throwers were just phenomenalShot, discus and javelin,” Hinze said. Powell had a personal best, with a throw of 145-6, in the discus to place third. Kristina Marin also threw for a personal best, with 136-8 to place fifth. Robin Pullen placed third in the javelin with 127-3, a personal best, and Balderson was right behind her, with 119-11 taking fifth.”We had a solid meet up and down the line even though we had a few mishaps, which are always going to happen,” Hinze said. The team has a month before the SLC outdoor championships, and Hinze said he hopes his team can build on the success they had last weekend.
