Tonight Program Council will flood the campus with multitudes of musical waves with the first Open Mic Night of the year.
Open Mic is a free event that allows artistically inclined members of the SHSU community to display their gifting in music and other art forms. Program Council Entertainment Chair, Jessica Titus, will be hosting, and she believes that it’s a prime chance for diversities of talents to shine.
“There are a lot of people at Sam who play music and sing, but they’ve never known about it,”said Titus. “I like to see people who have maybe never had the opportunity to perform.”
This is the events second year and its relevance is an intricate part of the diversity SHSU campus life. PC is known for throwing massive mixers like Casino Night, but Titus says Open Mic offers a “chill” alternative.
“Some people don’t like to come out to the big events where everyone is,” said Titus. “This is simpler, calm and people can watch and enjoy.”
Some of the changes to this years Open Mic include an upgraded sound system and the expansion in artist outreach. Although past Open Mics offered a variety of style, there was often repetition in the featured acts.
PC has sought to improve in their artist intake and has already seen the results from outreach. The response from the music community has been overwhelming.
“We got a lot of people who were interested, and the slots got filled up very quickly. I had never experienced that before,” said Titus.
One of the featured acts, Chris “SOUL” Mitchell, is a saxophone aficionado that spent his summer blazing the Houston music scene at popular venues like the Red Kat Jazz Caf and Isis Houston. Mitchell has high expectations for the event.
“Me and my band; we’re going to be getting in,” said Mitchell “It’s going to be a lot of good people coming to show talent.”
PC will be holding Open Mic once a month for the entire school year which leaves plenty of opportunity for performers to sign up and for Bearkats to attend. They hope to expand the event’s potential by having prize giveaways, free food, and are currently working on a way to make a compilation CD of different Open Mic performers to give away.
The musical experience begins at 8 p.m. at Farrington Pit and will include performances by Lauren Priputen, Terrance Johnson, Ronetta Mosley, Hubert Jones, Chris “SOUL” Mitchell, Tim Qualls and Daniel Pawlowski .
