Madison Gordon
Louise & Oleta's Tea House and Cafe is located on 1212 12th St in Huntsville, Texas.
Dining on a gluten-free diet can be tricky, but there are several locations around Huntsville that offer gluten-free options and make an effort to be safe for those with Celiac Disease or gluten intolerance.
As someone with Celiac Disease, I found eight restaurants around Huntsville that I have personally tested:
Please note that none of these are dedicated gluten-free facilities, so the risk of cross-contamination is always a possibility.
Chick-fil-a
If you’re looking for a quick fast food option, Chick-fil-a offers many gluten free options that are free of cross contamination due to separate fryers. My personal favorite gluten free Chick-fil-a order includes the grilled nuggets (or a grilled chicken sandwich with the gluten free bun), fries and a sweet tea or milkshake (without the maraschino cherry).
Chipotle
A second chain-restaurant option for a gluten free meal around town is Chipotle. Chipotle does a great job at making an effort to ensure that their bowls are safe from allergens. When coming inside to place my order, I make sure to politely ask them to switch their gloves and explain that I have a dietary restriction.
Louise & Oletta’s
Louise & Oletta’s is a lovely small business located in downtown Huntsville. They offer several options of gluten free soups, teas and pastries such as cookies and pumpkin bread. When I go to Louise & Oletta’s, I order chips and a gluten free sandwich, which uses the most delicious gluten free ciabatta bread!
C.A.T. Cafe
Huntsville’s C.A.T. Cafe is located just off the town square in the historic Walker County Jail. They offer gluten free drinks (hot chocolate, tea, coffee, etc), pastries (cookies, brigadeiros, cheesecake jar, etc), soups, jalapeño poppers and more.
Olive Garden
Another chain-restaurant option is Olive Garden. Olive Garden has several options of gluten free soups, pasta, steak and sirloin. When I go to Olive Garden, I like to order the gluten free rotini pasta with marinara and chicken and keep some for leftovers. I also like to order the salad and request croutons on the side for my friends while also keeping the salad safe for me to eat.
1836 Steakhouse
If you’re looking for a fancier dining option, 1836 Steakhouse is a great place to go. They have several gluten free options from salmon to sirloin, and gluten free sides, my favorite being their steak fries. Everything marked “GF” on their menu can be made gluten free by request.
7 Leguas
Like many Mexican Restaurants, 7 Leguas is able to easily accommodate gluten free diets by using corn tortillas in place of flour. There are several options at 7 Leguas for those with gluten sensitivity, my personal favorite being chicken quesadillas with corn tortillas and rice and beans on the side. Calling ahead and/or chatting with your waiter about your options is always a good idea.
Papa Loches
Similarly, Papa Loches was very accommodating when I came in for dinner. I ordered chicken quesadillas with corn tortillas and they kindly decided to make it first to lower the risk of cross contamination even more.
These are only a few of the restaurants around Huntsville that offer gluten-free, so it is always good to continue exploring and discovering new locations. You never know what you may find!
