Nestled in the heart of Huntsville, a vibrant new tribute to the town’s rich history is taking shape, adding an exciting layer to the local landscape.
Lee Jamison, a professional artist who has been painting since the mid-1990s, hopes the mural will be completed within the next month.
The new mural is located on Sam Houston Avenue in the courthouse square, at the new shop purchased by Carl Pittman and Kara Froelich. The establishment is set to become a bookstore and wine-tasting bar.
Pittman and Froelich contacted Jamison early in the summer to design the mural. The project aims to honor Huntsville’s role in Texas history. It includes images of Henderson King Yoakum, Jaspyr Sanford, Sam Houston and even Sammy Bearkat.
Samuel Walker Houston also appears on the wall. Houston was the son of Joshua Houston, a freed slave of Sam Houston State University’s namesake.
“He made attempts to get information about the Black history of Texas placed into textbooks, not successfully during his lifetime, but he was a significant contributor to trying to get that part of Texas history told,” Jamison explained.
Jamison will add this mural to his art collection in Huntsville. His previous work is displayed at Scott Johnson Elementary School, Walker County Storm Shelter, First United Methodist Church and Faith Lutheran School.
