The Sam Houston Memorial Museum and the Republic of Texas Presidential Library been part of the Sam Houston State University campus since 1937. It has stood as living testaments to the legendary figure they honor.
Nestled on fifteen acres that was once the home of General Sam Houston and his family, the museum is more than a place to learn—it offers a journey back in time. Inside, visitors can explore three wings of exhibits that detail the life of General Sam Houston, the Texas Revolution, and various collections that embody the spirit of Texas. The Memorial Museum hosts events throughout the year to celebrate the history, culture, and local talent of Huntsville.
This month, things have been even more exciting. The museum is organizing General Sam Houston Day and Sundown at Sam’s, two signature events that are just around the corner. These exciting events promise hands-on experiences, live music, and a true celebration of Huntsville culture. We encourage everyone to bring their lawn chairs and blacksmithing kits to enjoy these two free, family-friendly events.
General Sam Houston Day
Get ready to step into the 1800’s.
The Sam Houston Memorial Museum will celebrate General Sam Houston Day on Saturday, April 26th. The museum grounds will come alive with sights, sounds and stories from Sam Houston’s era. This free, family-friendly even is your ticket to the past. Starting at 10 a.m., the celebration honors the life and era of General Sam Houston, offering visitors an immersive historical experience complete with demonstrations, hands-on activities, and period music. Guests can immersive themselves in historical demonstrations like blacksmithing, woodworking, 19th-century medicine, kick wheel pottery, and more. Try your hand at activities such as candle dipping, tin punching, and making rag dolls. Feel the beat of period music and join in the fun with traditional dancing. Special guests from The Alamo, Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site, and the Cane Island Volunteers will join the festivities—offering live reenactments. By popular demand, the Iron Horse Guest Ranch will provide free wagon rides.
The Museum will provide visitors rare access to the lower level of the Steamboat House, typically closed to the public, plus a brand-new exhibit—a full-scale replica of Sam Houston’s 1837 Executive Mansion that the Museum unveiled in October 2024. Bring your picnic blanket (and maybe your blacksmithing kit!) And settle in for a full day of Texas-sized fun. Food and drinks will be available for purchase on-site, but outside food is welcome too. Parking will be available at the Katy & E. Don Walker, Sr. Education Center, as well as on 17th Street and Avenue M.
Sundown at Sam’s
When the sun beings to dip behind the trees, the music kicks on. Join us Thursday, May 1st, for Gospel Night, the final concert in the spring Sundown at Sam’s live music series. Set against the historic backdrop between the Steamboat House and Wigwam Neosho Museum Store, this is an evening you won’t want to miss. Kick back and enjoy performances by Dave McMahon and Praise on Purpose, local favorites bringing powerful gospel vibes to the museum lawn.
Started in 2023 by SHSU economics professor, Darren Grant, this series was born our of a love for music and community.
