What started off as a side hustle to earn more money to pay for classes ended up growing into a small business for one student at Sam Houston State University.
Natalia Conde’s business, Natalia’s Freshies, offers hand-crafted car air fresheners that are customizable to the customer’s liking.
“My mom’s car always had a freshie and I loved the way it looked the way it smelled … so I started this business and its really helping me save for my summer classes,” Conde said.
Fellow SHSU student and customer Alex Romero noted that he was surprised about the quality of the product.
“I thought it was gonna be one of those premade ones from Shein, but no, it smells amazing and super cool,” Romero said. “Definitely better than the ones I buy from the gas station.”
While basic scents like vanilla or lavender can be forgettable, Conde aims to offer something more memorable. She has freshie scents that include Pina Colada, Bikini Bottom and Baja Cactus Blossom. She also debuted four new scents this year, giving customers more of a variety.
According to a study from Cognitive Research, scents have different benefits—including functional, emotional and in-use, as well as your behavior towards buying something. Nostalgic or nice scents have been linked to reduced stress and boosts in serotonin.
Each freshie is crafted by hand and can be made with special designs, ranging from groovy smiles, to boho hippy, to trendy western. Custom SHSU designs are also popular among students.
