The Sam Houston Men’s Cross Country team tied for first place with Our Lady of the Lake at the Bearkat Twilight, where they competed against three other schools at Kate Barr-Ross Memorial Park.
A standout performance from the meet came from Bearkat freshman Emilio Garza, who completed a sub 16 minute 3.12 mile run, earning him second place overall, just behind Damon Gutierrez, a senior from Our Lady of the Lake.
Football drops to 0-3
Following two consecutive losses to Western Kentucky and UNLV, the Bearkats traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii, to face the 1-1 Hawaii Rainbow Warriors.
Sam Houston ultimately succumbed to Hawaii with a score of 37-20, having trailed throughout the game.
Mabrey Mettauer led the team in both passing and rushing, recording 91 yards through the air and 45 on the ground.
Landyn Locke made his first collegiate appearance midway through the fourth quarter after a targeting penalty against Hawaii’s linebacker Jamih Otis, and another hard hit sidelined Mettauer.
Locke finished the drive with a touchdown pass to running back Elijah Green, narrowing Hawaii’s lead to seven points before the Rainbow Warriors rolled off 10 straight to end the game.
Volleyball delivers strong showing at SFA Tournament
Following a 1-2 performance at the Bearkat Invitational, the Sam Houston Volleyball team traveled northeast to Nacogdoches for the Stephen F. Austin Tournament, where they competed against Abilene Christian, Louisiana, and the host team, Stephen F. Austin.
The team concluded the weekend with a 2-1 record, with victories over Abilene Christian and Stephen F. Austin, while suffering a four-set defeat to Louisiana on Friday.
To open the tournament, the Bearkats prevailed in a thrilling five-set match against Abilene Christian after initially trailing two sets to one.
With the score being tied at 9-9 in the fourth set, Michaela Panekova secured the lead for the Bearkats; a position they successfully held throughout the remainder of the set, ultimately forcing a crucial fifth set.
After trailing 5-4 in the fifth set, the team rallied for a comeback, scoring 11 of the final 15 points to take the match.
Chloe Monson led the team with 19 kills in the game, while Avery Fowler contributed significantly by tacking on 42 assists.
Despite their initial momentum, the Bearkats were unable to keep the good vibes flowing, suffering a defeat in their next game of the tournament against Louisiana.
The team would lose the first two sets of the game before climbing back to win the third set 27-25 to avoid the sweep.
Ultimately, the Ragin’ Cajuns would close the door on the Bearkats in the fourth set, clinching four of the last five points in the set to secure the win.
Monson once again led the team in kills with 12, while Fowler added 25 assists.
The Bearkats closed the tournament with a victory over hosts Stephen F. Austin, prevailing in four sets.
Every set in this match was highly competitive, showcasing a back-and-forth exchange that required a tiebreaker to determine the winner.
The Bearkats had an opportunity to secure the first set against the Lumberjacks; however, the Lumberjacks rallied back, scoring three consecutive points to take the set.
The Bearkats then went on to win the next three sets, finishing the tournament with a winning record.
Lauren Malone led the team’s offense with 27 kills, while Avery Fowler had 38 assists in the rivalry match win.
Soccer takes down Grand Canyon
Following a 3-1 loss at home against Lamar, the Bearkats soccer team traveled to Phoenix, Arizona, to compete against Grand Canyon University.
The team left victorious with a 1-0 win, attributed to an 80th-minute goal placed into the bottom left corner of the net by freshman Ellie Morgan.
Goalkeeper Katie Bahn had seven saves during the match, including a crucial save in the 83rd minute that helped secure the win for the Bearkats.
The Bearkats would next travel to Dallas on Sunday to face Southern Methodist University.
Unfortunately, the team lost 3-1 against the Mustangs, who scored two goals in the first half, leaving the Bearkats trailing at halftime.
The Mustangs added an insurance goal in the 74th minute before Ellie Morgan managed to score her second goal of the season in the 85th minute, putting the Kats on the scoreboard.

The cross country team is set to travel to College Station for the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday.
The football team is on their first bye week before heading to Austin to face the number seven-ranked Texas Longhorns on September 20.
The volleyball team will compete against Lamar on Tuesday at Johnson Coliseum before heading to Corpus Christi for the Islanders Classic on Friday and Saturday.
The soccer team is headed to Louisiana to face the McNeese Cowgirls on Thursday.
