
SHSU’s Chloe Monson, a freshman outside hitter, was recognized as the Conference USA Volleyball Freshman of the Week on Monday for her outstanding performance at the Bearkat Classic over the weekend.
This marks the first conference honor received by the Bearkats, who currently hold an 8-5 overall record in non-conference play.
Monson, a San Antonio native from Pieper High School, secured a spot on the all-tournament team for the second consecutive weekend. She played a crucial role in the Bearkats’ victories against Houston Christian University and the University of Louisiana-Monroe.
She expressed that being recognized as CUSA Freshman of the Week holds significant meaning for her, serving as a reward for all the effort she has put in so far.
“It shows me that all the hard work and long hours I have put in during pre-season is paying off,” Monson said. “People are seeing the big things I am doing and accomplishing as just a freshman.”
During the Bearkat Classic, she tallied 57 kills and 38 digs.
Monson currently leads the conference rankings with 242 points and also leads in total kills. Additionally, she ranks second in kills per set in the conference.
She presently leads the team in kills, with 229, ranks sixth in assists with 11, is also sixth in service aces with eight, and holds seventh place with nine blocks.
Monson has also made significant contributions on the defensive side of the court, recording 121 digs, placing third on the team.
With an impressive average of 4.02 kills per set, she ranks 60th in the nation and stands second among freshmen nationwide. Additionally, she holds the second spot nationally in total kills.
Monson expressed her commitment to working hard and her determination to maintain the team’s success throughout the season.
“My goal for the season is to continue to play a big role and do everything I can so that our team can be successful in our conference and overall have a successful year,” Monson said.
The team will start conference play by facing UTEP in a two-match series this weekend. The first match is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m., followed by the second match on Saturday at 1 p.m. Both games will be available for viewing on ESPN+.
