Sam Houston State University hosted one of its most energetic events, Sammypalooza, earlier this month.
With headlining performances from rap artists Juicy J and Waka Flocka Flame, the annual concert at Johnson Coliseum drew hundreds of students and community members, eager to experience live music from some of hip-hop’s most recognizable names. The atmosphere inside was loud and electric, as students filled the floor in anticipation well before the first artist took the stage.
Originally, rapper That Mexican OT was set to perform, but he dropped at the last minute. However, acclaimed rapper Juicy J, known for his work in the group Three 6 Mafia, energized the audience with fan favorites such as “Half on a Sack” and “Stay Fly.” His performance showcased his influence over southern hip-hop, and kept the crowd engaged from start to finish.

Following Juicy J was Waka Flocka Flame, who delivered a high-energy and captivating set. Performing hits such as “Grove St. Party” and “Dark Horse,” Waka had the audience chanting along and moving in unison. His ability to connect with the crowd made for a lively atmosphere that carried through the night.
Following their performances, both Juicy J and Waka Flocka took the opportunity to meet with Sam Houston State faculty and staff. The interaction highlighted the unique bridge between student life, university leadership and the music industry.
For many in attendance, Sammypalooza 2025 stood out as more than just a concert—it was a celebration of community and campus spirit. With two high-profile artists delivering outstanding performances, the event added another memorable chapter to SHSU traditions.
