Sam Houston State University’s Student Government Association has officially outgrown its office.
At the first meeting of the spring semester, SGA added another member. This is a special occasion, as the process of joining takes two weeks. That member stayed in the process over winter break and came back ready to serve.
Currently, Student Government Association is operating on 61 members. This was a substantial jump from SGA’s past member count, which averaged roughly 28 members for two years.
So, what changed? Some members attribute it to Bearkat Kickoff, a new program Sam Houston State introduced in 2023. Others attribute SGA’s growth to its members’ increased recruiting efforts.
Alexis Argueta, the SGA education chair, indicates a lack of available time to her joining when she did. Like Argueta, some students’ biggest reason for not being involved more is time—time devoted to work, school, friends and other aspects of life.
“At the moment, SGA was just a time I couldn’t commit to because of scholarship commitments and other organization commitments,” Argueta stated.
SGA members have to balance a busy schedule and hectic weeks. For students like Mia Abrego, friends introduced them to SGA.
“My friend brought me to a senate meeting,” Abrego said. “I got pulled in from there.”
To become a part of Student Government Association, start by visiting their senate meetings. These take place on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. in the College of Criminal Justice’s courtroom.
