Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow (ACT) is an organization that trains and develops the next generation of advocates hoping to bridge the gap between the agriculture industry and the public.
As a part of Sam Houston State University’s Department of Agriculture, ACT allows students to blend their passion for the agriculture industry with essential communication skills.
This organization offers hands-on experience through workshops, networking events and guest speakers from industry professionals, while learning crucial tools for effectively communicating agricultural information or events to a wide audience.
“Agricultural Communications majors can sometimes get too focused on their own interests and passions, which might make them miss out on networking in other areas,” agricultural sciences professor Dr. Maureene Victoria said. “This club offers more than just agricultural communication—it’s a great opportunity to connect with people who share a similar passion for agriculture. Joining the club can help us build those connections, and it also gives students access to exclusive internships through SHSU.”
Recent surveys illustrate the importance of bridging the gap between producer and consumer.
The Farmer Jones Farm survey found that around 68% of people are unaware of where their food comes from and how its produced, so clear communication helps build trust and understanding of agriculture. When agricultural practices are explained in a relatable way, it opens space for more meaningful conversations.
This not only benefits the public but also supports farmers and producers by creating an informed consumer and a supportive community. Those interested in joining ACT can keep up with their Instagram account for information on the next student meeting.
“Our goal with ACT is to make sure the drive for agriculturalists isn’t lost over time.” ACT president Cassidy Graves said. “We want to make a difference in the future of agriculture by creating advocates to help in the future.”
