The Sam Houston men’s basketball team snapped a seven-game losing streak on Thursday night with a 66-61 win over first-place Jacksonville State.
The Bearkats are now 2-10 in Conference USA play.
Sam Houston locked in defensively down stretch to finally secure a close game, something the team has struggled with in conference play so far this season. The Bearkats closed the game on a 14-3 run.
“More proud of our guys than anything,” Sam Houston head coach Chris Mudge said. “They played so tough, and they locked in on the things we’ve been talking about. Every one of our conference games has been just like that, and we did a phenomenal job finishing those tough plays”.
Lamar Wilkerson scored a team-high 29 points for Sam Houston, while Kalifa Sahko and Marcus Boykin both finished with 12 points. Jaron Pierre Jr led the way for the Gamecocks with 21 points.
The Bearkats shot 45.1% from the field, while the Gamecocks shot 42.1%.
Sam Houston will host Kennesaw State on Saturday. After that, the Bearkats will head back on the road to play Western Kentucky on Feb. 20 and Middle Tennessee on Feb. 22.
