Temperatures in the Huntsville area are expected to dip below freezing this week, according to the National Weather Service.
A cold front is set to arrive Tuesday night with a low of 32 degrees, with temperatures predicted to reach 41 degrees on Wednesday amid slight wind and sunny skies. A cold weather advisory will take effect from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning. An extreme cold watch is in effect for 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Thursday, with chilly winds expected to feel as low as 10 degrees in Walker County.
Wednesday and Thursday have lows of 22 and 28 degrees, respectively, with temperatures set to rise back above freezing on Friday.
Huntsville residents are encouraged to refrain from going outside without proper attire and to be cautious when letting pets out. It is also recommended to dress in warm layers of clothing, such as scarves, gloves and thick socks. Potential health risks, including hyperthermia and frostbite, can occur if proper safety precautions are not taken.
Extended freezing temperatures could also cause water pipes to freeze, and potentially burst. Wrapping faucets with tape or allowing them to drip slowly can help prevent pipe damage during a freeze.
Other recommended safety precautions include ensuring elderly relatives and friends are safe during these harsh weather conditions and making sure that heaters are being utilized properly. Generators and grills should not be used inside homes.
Individuals who must travel are encouraged to dress appropriately and be cautious on the roads.
