The SHSU Rugby Club bounced back after last week’s 0-16 loss to Texas A&M by winning the Stephen F. Austin Tournament on Saturday. The Bearkats began the day by upending Southwest Texas 24-0 and defeating Stephen F. Austin 46-0. In the championship match, the Kats beat a combined University of Houston/S.F.A alumni team 39-0. Captain Casey Dillon was awarded MVP for the tournament.”Overall, we played like a team,” said scrumhalf Jake Key. “This weekend was a great comeback after a couple of recent losses. Our rookies stepped up, and the veterans played like we showed we could at the end of last year.”Special recognition goes to Dillon, James Browder, Kirby Dorman and Kenneth Hepburn for making the Texas Select-Side squad and recently traveling to Kansas with other Texas collegiate all-stars.The rugby team hosts Angelo State this weekend for an all-important division match. Kick-off is at 2 p.m. at Pritchett Field. The team invites all fans to cheer them on.
