The SHSU National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will host its annual fashion show Nov. 14th at 7 p.m. in the LSC Ballroom.”This year, the SHSU NAACP wanted a more diverse outlook on fashion,” said fashion-show advertiser Candi Rivers. “We had a committee hand pick the models instead of them signing up.”Rivers said the models this year were diverse. The fashion show will consist of 25 female and male models. All the models will be in clothes designed by students in the SHSU design program. Melanie Rhodes is a student designer. “I was given two models,” said Rhodes. “I had to design one outfit for the boy and one for the girl.”Rhodes said that the designs are creative and are possibly things nobody has ever seen before. The outfit for the woman model took two days and the man’s is not yet finished, said Rhodes. “We encourage anyone to come and check us [designers] out.”The SHSU chapter of the NAACP supplied each designer with the material, said Rivers. The designer only had to make the outfit.A jazz band will accompany the fashion show because “we want to set the tone for elegance,” Rhodes said.”This year’s fashion show is going to be a big event,” said NAACP fashion show co-chair Marlena Cooper. “It will be totally different from the past fashion shows because of the diversity in the models and outfits.”This year will be more like a Hollywood fashion show rather than a competition fashion show,” said Cooper. The models are not intended to compete with one another. Every person in the audience will be given a chance to vote on the best designer and best model. Cooper said the winners would be announced at the end of the show.During the fashion show, the fashion police will be on patrol. The fashion police poll the audience, asking the audiences opinion on the designs and different fashions, said Cooper. There will also be a video featuring a wide variety of fashion designers such as Baby Phat and Calvin Klein.”We want to show how the fashion outside the realm we are in ties together with our fashion show,” said Cooper. “We don’t want to limit what fashion is supposed to be in this show. Fashion is what you make it. It is your own.”The NAACP fashion show tickets are $2 in advance and $4 at the door. Tables seating 10 people may be purchased in advance for $20 by any organization or group of individuals, said Rivers. The fashion show is a fundraiser, with all proceeds going to the NAACP. The event is open to all SHSU students and the Huntsville community.
