Recreational Sports looks to boost Homecoming spirit this weekend with its annual 5k Raven Run.The annual 5K marathon, dubbed “The Raven Run”, will be held at 5 p.m. Oct. 26. This is one of the special events put on every year by the department, and has been a Homecoming tradition for the past few years. Amy Swingle, assistant director of Recreational Sports, said it was moved to Homecoming to encourage participation particularly among the faculty and staff. The run will be split into four separate divisions: faculty and staff, alumni, students and student organizations. The registration fee to enter is $5 before the race and $7 the day of. The entry fee will cover the cost of the event, along with the T-shirts and prizes. All who enter will receive a free Raven Run T-shirt. Also, specially added this year will be a one-mile walk for those who would like to participate, but are not into running.The top three male and female finishers in each division will be awarded with a medal to brandish proudly, and show their homecoming spirit. Student organizations have the unique opportunity to win spirit points by participating, and help further the organization in the Homecoming festivities. The five kilometer race, which is equal to about 3.2 miles, will begin and end in the faculty/staff parking lot on the east end of the HKC. The run will encompass a hilly road course and will pass around Bowers Stadium, then loop around campus and ending where it started. The run could take anywhere from 12 to 25 minutes to complete, or longer depending on runners individual pace. Maps of the course are available upon request while registering. Students interested are encouraged to register soon, since the attendance of this event has increased each year it has been held.
