Over the past couple of weeks, I have followed with amazement and some disbelief the issues discussed in the Viewpoints page. The “targeting of minorities by UPD and HPD” particularly caught my eye. The Texas Criminal Law and Motor Vehicle Handbook states that “a person commits an offense if the person attaches to or displays on a motor vehicle insignia that: is…insignia that is not authorized by law.” Members of Greek organizations are not exempt from this law. SHSU has a majority of minorities involved in Greek organizationstherefore more minority Greek license platestherefore more ticketing of minorities. This is not an “intentional targeting of minorities”. Do the math. In support of our police departments, consider the alternative. I, personally, would rather have an active police department than one who is never seen and can not be depended on. Racial profiling does exist, however, may I suggest that most minority slights in issues of ticketing are imagined. One’s own personal experience should not be held to be the majority. I consider myself to be an average student, yet I have never been “harassed or targeted” by police. If you are in violation of the law, then certainly you should be stopped and ticketed. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. In response to Mr. Charlton’s remark that “(minorities) are greatly out-numbered by the majority on this campus” I would like to disagree. The actual numbers may favor the majority population, but the social environment on campus is predominantly minority based. Organizations that are geared towards minorities are prominent and numerous. In fact, there are organizations that are ONLY comprised of minorities. Dare I mention discrimination? Great advocates of equality would concur that reverse discrimination is still discrimination. I charge all students of Sam Houston State University to practice true tolerance and move beyond these issues of minority/majority.
