After reading Tuesday’s article about UPD and HPD ticketing students for replacing their numbered license plates with Greek lettered plates, I was totally amazed. It seems to me that Huntsville and SHSU proves, once again, to be racially biased. I say this because it is a fact that the majority of students that have Greek letter license plates on their vehicles are the minority students, mainly Hispanic and African-American. Caucasian students do have back plates and stickers on their vehicles, but they do not have Greek letter front plates. To students who don’t believe me: Go around campus and count how many African-American and Hispanic Greek organization plates you see, then count how many Caucasian Greek organization plates you see. You will surely see that I am not paranoid or crazy. It’s the truth and there are a lot of people here who don’t want to see or hear the truth, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Furthermore, why are UPD and HPD beginning to distribute tickets now? Students have had Greek letter front plates for many years. Why the sudden change? My guess is that SHSU and Huntsville feel like they are not getting enough of the students’ money, and have found another way to get it. Also, did any kind of warning go out to the students about the tickets? I don’t think so. I understand it is the state law and everyone should have known; however, as I stated before, neither UPD nor HPD have been enforcing the law, so I feel like they should have at least sent out a letter to all students about it instead of just distributing a bunch of tickets one day. Why haven’t UPD and HPD been enforcing this rule? Again, why now? Another question is: Are there any people in Huntsville or at SHSU getting hurt by the students having the Greek plates on their vehicles? NO! If UPD or HPD took a poll, they would find that the plates are not bothering any one; it’s just a way of showing pride in one’s organization. To sum up, I believe UPD and HPD officers have too much time on their hands. University and Huntsville officials should be worried about more pressing issues that are going on at SHSU and in Huntsville than writing some little tickets. If anyone is confused as to what some of the “pressing issues,” I am talking speaking of, go to https://thehoustoniannews.com/main.cfm/include/detail/storyid/271925.html to find out. Like the article on Tuesday said, they should worry more about fighting crime and less on ticketing students with Greek plates.
