On the occasion of National Depression Screening Day, SHSU’s Counseling Center has plenty to offer students this year regarding mental health.National Depression Screening Day is Oct. 10 and the SHSU Counseling Center will be hosting its own Mental Awareness Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students are invited to visit the center during this time and complete a short screening form. The Counseling Center is located next to the Farrington Building. After completing the screening form, students will be given the chance to speak one on one with a counselor who will review the form. Students will be advised as to whether or not they should seek further assistance at the center.Completing the form will only take a few minutes and the counseling session will only last about five to 10 minutes, but due to the high volume of students expected to participate, a wait is expected. Both the screening and counseling session are completely confidential.”We had about 300 students participate last year,” said Dr. Natalie Menendes, counseling psychologist. “So those who come this year should expect a wait.”The service is free. The Counseling Center will also be distributing prizes such as stress reduction toys. In addition, several professors are offering extra credit to students who participate. “If you are concerned about yourself or somebody else, you should definitely take advantage of this,” said Menendes.Other services offered by the Counseling Center include individual counseling, which is available by appointment or by walk in. The center also offers help with choosing a major and couples counseling. All of these services are completely confidential and free to all SHSU students. The Counseling Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information on Mental Awareness Day or any other services offered by the Counseling Center, call 294-1720.
