For students looking for an alternative to their traditional workout routine or just to have a good time, the SHSU Department of Recreational Sports has a variety of activities in the works for the fall semester.Amy Swingle, assistant director for club sports and special events, said the Recreational Sports staff has a number of fun sports-related events planned for students. The first special event is the Night Owl Softball Tournament to be held Friday night. Bearkats set on a full eight hours of sleep need not apply for this one, as it starts at 6 p.m. and lasts until sunrise.”This event is a lot of fun and it’s been really successful in the past,” Swingle said. “It really is a night owl event. We play a round robin, then single elimination tournament and it usually doesn’t end until between 6 and 7 a.m.”Each team has to have at least 10 students,” she said. “It doesn’t matter if the teams are made up of all men, all women or are co-ed. This is an open tournament so we don’t have strict guidelines on how many men or women each team has to have.”Swingle said students could sign up to play in either the competitive or recreational division. There will be a $50 entry fee per team and all entries must be received in the HKC by noon today.Rec. Sports, in conjunction with the Department of Student Activities, Barnes and Noble University Bookstore, Student Legal Services, SHSU Counseling Center and the Office of the Vice President of Student Services, will hold Poker Walk on campus Oct. 16. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Held in past semesters, Poker Walk will once again offer students a chance to play casino games for a chance to win a variety of prizes.”Poker Walk is another really fun event,” Swingle said. “We’ll once again be providing prizes and opportunities for students to win everything from cash awards to SHSU T-shirts, sweatshirts and jackets.”Swingle said Rec. Sports is also in the planning stages of events to highlight SHSU’s Homecoming in October. She said the Night Owl Softball Tournament and Poker Walk are the two of the biggest special events Rec. Sports offers students. “We like to offer these fun things for students,” Swingle said. “Sporting type events are a great way to break up the routine of just working out at the gym and they offer students fun weekend activities. Things like Poker Walk also give students a chance to take a break and have a little fun between classes.”Another popular attraction of Rec. Sports is intramural sports. Each semester a variety of sports are offered to meet student’s interests. Although flag football and bowling have already started, there are other intramural sports whose entries are still open. Intramural volleyball entries opened Sept. 18 and are due Oct. 7. Each team should have at least four players, but six are recommended.Intramural soccer entries also opened Sept. 18 and are due Oct. 21. Each team should have between eight and 11 players ready to take the field Oct. 28.Entries for nine ball and table tennis intramurals are due by Nov. 4. Play begins in the Lowman Student Center Nov. 7.Rec. Sports also sponsors a Fall Classic Basketball Tournament. Entries are due Nov. 25, with the five person teams hitting the court Dec. 2.Students say intramurals serve as a good way to work out, meet people and get involved on campus.”I think taking part in intramurals can sometimes bring out student spirit,” said Mike Prociuk, graduate assistant in intramural sports. “It also promotes campus involvement, which is a really good thing for students.”For more information about intramural sports or any of the events offered by Rec. Sports, call 294-1967 or visit the Rec. Sports Web site on the SHSU home page.
