The Student Government Association discussed the new procedures for Homecoming elections at its meeting on Tuesday night.Constance Jones, SGA vice president, said SGA is in charge of the election process for Homecoming King and Queen, and that the rules and regulations committee is currently working on getting the procedures ready for the event. Banks said the king and queen had to be sponsored by an organization in past years, but this year anyone will have a chance to apply. There will be an application fee and a screening process for each applicant. Emily Billings, co-chair of the rules and regulations committee, said the committee members met and edited the forms for Homecoming. They also discussed the option of voting by scantron instead of online. SGA President Helena Banks said she spoke with Dr. Thelma Douglass, vice president of Student Services, Friday concerning the cleaning of the Lowman Student Center. Douglass said there were companies hired for construction and decoration when the LSC was renovated, but there was no company hired for cleaning. Douglass said she would send a cleaning company into the building to polish floors, get rid of dust and put finishing touches on it. Banks said the cleaning crew would eliminate odors and they would repair the older elevators in the building. There is currently no set start date for the cleaning.Banks said the game room in the LSC would open as soon as all the ordered equipment arrives. She said the LSC has already started the hiring process for game room employees. University President James Gaertner will host a focus group concerning the renovation of the HKC, Banks said. Students will be able to express their opinions and concerns about the renovation, and the architects will attend and take advice from the student body. The focus group will be held Sept. 27 in the Health and Kinesiology Center in room 240. The 2002-03 allotment of funds for SGA was divided among the committees, office expenses and wages. “This is just a proposed budget,” said Banks. “A lot of these numbers give committees some wiggle room. They don’t always use the money, but this is how they can use it.”The student life committee was allotted $2,175; senate interns were allotted $300; the grievance committee was allotted $250; the external affairs committee was allotted $500; the academic affairs committee was allotted $300; the communications committee was allotted $300; and the executive committee was allotted $9,600. Caucuses were allotted $400. For office expenses, $856.56 was allotted, and $1815 was allotted for executive board wages.SGA Secretary Derek Buster said there are 15 senate seats available in the College of Education and Applied Science Caucus, but there are no senators to fill the spots. He said there are 15 seats available in the College of Arts and Sciences Caucus, but only four spots are filled. Ben Bostick, speaker of the senate, said the College of Business Administration comprises nine seats and there are 11 candidates for the senate seats. The College of Criminal justice comprises six seats and there are seven senate candidates. “We need to clean house and take care of business,” said Banks. She said there are senators that are not fulfilling the requirements expected of them, which are serving office hours and coming to meetings. Banks said some aspiring senators are working harder than the people already appointed as senators, and those people are not able to be senators because senators not performing up to par are taking their place. “It’s our role as senators to represent the students,” said Jones. “That’s why the theme of our senator retreat this year is ‘Taking Care of Business’.” Jones reminded SGA members that the retreat will be Sept. 27 and 28, and that it is required for all senators. It will consist of instructional workshops and inspirational speeches to the senators by Gaertner, Douglass and Dean of Students Frank Parker. Banks said the Student Advisory Board, founded by Douglass, consists of two delegates from each school in the Texas State University System. The delegates will meet with the Board of Regents to exchange ideas and to see how policies are being worked in other schools. Banks said the delegates from SHSU would be herself and Jones. SHSU has also been given the responsibility of hosting the Web site for the Student Advisory Board. Construction of the site is currently underway.
