The Bearkat volleyball team is 2-1 in the Southland Conference after defeating LouisianaMonroe, and then falling to Northwestern State, in weekend play.On Friday, the LadyKats came out firing on LAMonroe and won the match in three games by scores of 30-19, 30-20 and 30-26.Carrie Sartain led the team with 17 kills. Chrissy Engle came in with 11 and Teri Palmer with 10. Karlee Butler added seven kills and set up 43. Defensively, libero Emily Orlowski took 13 digs, while Butler, Chelsea Johnson and Jennifer Henrichsen each had 10. Sartain followed with nine digs.Saturday proved to be a different story when Northwestern State defeated the LadyKats in three games, 34-32, 30-28 and 30-18. Coach Brenda Gray took the loss in stride, and continued her positive outlook for the season.”Of course, I wish we were 3-0, and I think we should be 3-0,” she said. “That was just a match where they played with so much emotion. But we’ve got to look ahead. We can’t draw on what’s already happened. Our goal this year, since we’ve been down, is to get back into the tournament and see what happens. If we have an ‘oops’ along the way, then ‘oops’.”Coming through for the Demons with 16 kills was Evelyn Getzen, followed by Christina Stone knocking down 12.On the defensive side, the Demons posted 11 blocks, and Cathy Herring added 18 digs.Once again, leading SHSU was Sartain, with 14 kills and 13 digs. Engle posted 11 kills, while Butler had two kills, 34 assists and 12 digs. For the remainder of conference play, Sartain is proving to be a force for the LadyKats, having team goals and personal goals in mind every time she steps on the court.”I haven’t been to a tournament since I got here,” she said. “I think this year, games aren’t going to be as expected. I think we definitely have a chance. This last weekend showed us that we do have things we need to work on, but overall, we’re a great team. If we just put the little things together, I think we can go out and definitely win the tournament.”Sartain’s personal objectives also drive her to a better performance.”I’m feeling good,” she said. “There are definitely a couple of things I need to work on. I feel like I’m making too many errors right now. I’m trying as hard as I can to go out every game and say, ‘five kills a game’.”Looking ahead to the next conference game, the LadyKats will face TexasSan Antonio tonight at 7 p.m. in Johnson Coliseum. It is orange crush night, so come out and support the volleyball team and get a free orange drink, compliments of SHSU.
