The Sam Houston State men’s golf team placed seventh in the North Texas Mean Green Men’s Golf Classic and the women’s team finished ninth in their first tournament of the season at the North Texas Eagle Women’s Golf Invitational. SHSU Golf Coach Craig Rex traveled with the women’s team to the Oakmont Country Club in Corinth on Monday and Tuesday.Rex made this the first tournament for the women’s team to allow them more time to get used to SHSU since they are a young team with one freshman, two sophomores and one junior.”My philosophy is to get into the classroom and get a handle on things,” Rex said. The Bearkat women finished ninth with a total score of 946. Rex said the team struggled in the second round of the tournament. “The first day really did it for us and then we struggled in the second round,” Rex said. “Golf is a funny game, you don’t always get the breaks.”Sophomore Raman Saran, finished 23rd individually, to lead the SHSU women’s golf team as the Kats placed ninth with a team total of 317-325-304946.Saran shot 79-82-72 over 54 holes, for a total of 233.Other SHSU scores were Kristen Cook, 29th, 77-81-78- 236; Kayla Duhr, 36th, 81-80-77- 238; Brittany Spieth, 49th, 80-88-77- 245; and Emily Ogilvy, 60th, 89-88-89- 254.The next tournament for the SHSU women will be the fifth annual University of Arkansas Razorback Invitational at Pinnacle Country Club in Fayetteville, Ark., Oct. 7 and 8.Rex did not travel with the men when they finished seventh of 14 teams at the Bridlewood Golf Club in Flower Mound. “The only thing you can control in golf is the score, so we want to get out there and keep our goal with everyone shooting under a 75,” Rex said. The Kats 54-hole team total was 284-292-297- – 873 Shaun Goodwin tied for tenth place, shooting 68-72-75 for a 215 total.Other SHSU individual finisher’s were; Luke Doebele, 13th, with a 71- 73-72- -216 total; Brian Bohing, 19th, 68-73-76 – -217; Scott Ragsdale, 58th, 77-74-74 – -225 total.
