There was a situation yesterday in which I had to accompany a reporter to a department in efforts to obtain information regarding a news story. We arrived only find the department did not want to talk to The Houstonian. The person(s) we wanted to speak with regarding a special event in that department, said they were misquoted by the newspaper in the past and would not be quoted again. I am in no way trying to justify the lack of accuracy in reporting. I personally think that misquoting sources is unacceptable and should not happen. What got to me was that I was being held accountable for what The Houstonian has done in the past. Although I have been a part of this newspaper for three years, I cannot be held responsible for its content in the past because I was not editor in chief. I am now. This indicates a new year and The Houstonian is under new direction. If your department or organization has had a bad experience with the newspaper in the past, please move on. If you choose not to, you will only be denying the university and community information on what is happening in your department or organization. Now, back to the situation at hand. The person(s) at the department in question did not want to talk to me because of what previous reporters have done. If she or he had said they were misquoted during this semester, I would have apologized and possibly let him or her read the story before it was printed. I am the editor and editors are held responsible for whatever is printed in the paper. I would have taken full responsibility. But should I have to defend or go out of my way to mend something that happened years ago? I think not. Each year The Houstonian is going to change., Whether it’s for better or worse soley depends on the editor.. I should not be prohibited from doing my job based on the past. If someone is misquoted during this semester while I am the editor, then, and only then can I be held responsible. In any other case, let’s move on.
