The Zeta Tau Alpha sorority will host their second annual charity golf tournament benefiting the Susan G. Comen Breast Cancer Society on Saturday at the Texas National Golf Tournament in Willis.”Last year we raised $8,000. We’re hoping to raise at least that much this year,” said Stephanie Jones, sorority historian. Twenty four-man teams will compete for the $500 first prize, as well as many other prizes donated by area businesses. Each golfer will receive a free polo shirt and lunch provided by Carraba’s. There will also be a silent auction and raffle, which non-golfers can participate in. Lunch for non-golfers will be $5.”We’ve had a lot of support and help from some of our Zeta alumni,” said Erin Massey, who helped coordinate the event. “Kerri Chaney and Erin West really helped with coordinating it and getting prizes and sponsors.”One unique feature will be the participation of SHSU Alum, Larry Alford, nicknamed “The One-Armed Golfer.” “He will be at one of the holes challenging the golfers to shoot better than him,” Jones said, “If they can do it, they win a prize.”Members of the sorority will be working the tournament and providing refreshments to the golfers. “I didn’t work it last year, but I know it will be a lot of fun,” said Massey.Donated prizes include two tickets to the PGA Master’s tournament, as well as tickets to the U.S. Open. Also up for grabs during the event will be two round-trip tickets on Continental Airlines, a putter, gift certificates to area restaurants, a one-night stay at LaQuinta and a host of other items. The Texas National Golf Course is an 18-hole, par 72 course. It hosts the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and is featured in the 2002 Official Texas Golf Guide. Architect Jack Miller borrowed some of the course’s design from the legendary Augusta National course.Situated among a forest of thick pine, the combination of tree-lined fairways and elevation changes makes this course unlike any other in the Houston area and a favorite of East Texas golfers.
