Rotaract and approximately 25 other campus organizations are joining together for the 8th Annual Bearkat Attack on April 13.Individuals and organizations that volunteer will assist in several community service activities throughout the day.Brandon Lowery, public relations officer for Rotaract said there would be a variety of projects including building wheel chair ramps, yard work, and applying siding to homes.”We have about nine to 10 projects right now, but we need more,” Lowery said. Most projects will be in Huntsville and some are outside Huntsville along Highway 30.Lowery said Rotaract discovers the need for volunteers by contacting churches, missionary groups and other local organizations. However, not all service work can be completed through Bearkat Attack.”Someone wanted us to help put up a roof,” Lowery said. “Some of the jobs are way out of our hands, but we can do most of the jobs.”In order to ensure the projects are completed properly, each Bearkat Attack group is assigned a site leader. The site leaders know how to complete the job and have been educated through prior knowledge or books available through local hardware stores, such as McCoy’s or Home Depot.”Last year we had some individual contractors come to the sites and help us out,” Lowery said.Rotaract is searching for more volunteers and monetary donations. There is no entry fee for individuals or organizations to participate. Each volunteer receives a T-shirt and is eligible to win a door prize.Several local businesses have donated door prizes including pizza, drinks and gift cards. Restaurants such as Chili’s Grill & Bar, McKenzie’s Barbeque, Nautilus, Pizza Hut and Dollar General have donated door prizes, as well.Personal donations, Rotaract fundraisers and businesses, such as The Huntsville/Walker County Chamber of Commerce, Zach’s Bar & Grill and Tanya’s, fund the community service projects.Bearkat Attack volunteers will meet on the day of the event at the West Hill Mall at 7:30 a.m. If you would like to volunteer, meet the group at the mall and sign up to participate. A free breakfast will be served, and Rotaract members will assign projects.
