I was very disappointed by the article “Bush Administration must allow Israel to destroy Yasser Arafat” written by Dr. Yaron Brook. I believe that this is Dr. Brook’s personal opinion, and I very much respect his opinion, but I have a few points I would like Dr. Brook to know.First of all, I think all of the recent violence that has been taking place would not have happened if President Bush had picked up where president Clinton left off. Instead, Bush decided to let Israel and Palestine handle the problem for themselves, and now things are getting out of control. The Clinton administration was almost one step closer to a peace deal in the region, and if the Bush administration would have picked up from there, I think the problems would have being less severe or complicated.Secondly, how can Dr. Brook say the Bush administration must allow Israel to destroy Yasser Arafat when the administration has no idea what their policy is in that region? If Dr. Brook had been listening to the news in the past week, he would have noticed that the Bush administration has different policy towards the Mideast every single day. One day, Bush told the prime minister of Israel that he was not helping the peace process by sending his military into the Palestinian territory. A day or so after, he sides with Israel for sending their troops to Palestine. Two days after, the U.S.supports a United Nation resolution that asked Israel to withdraw all of her troops from the Palestinian territory. I realize that Israel is one of the United State’s biggest allies, but how can this administration allow Israel to destroy Arafat? I will guarantee, if they allow Israel to kill Arafat and the problem gets worse, the Bush administration will blame the Israel government for the problem.Thirdly, I want to know what is Dr. Brook’s opinion about all the trouble the Israeli military has caused the innocent Palestinian citizens. They passed a 24-hour curfew in the town of Ramallah, which has a population of 70,000 people, 10,000 of whom are American citizens. These people are running out of food, water and electricity. What about how they are taking innocent 15-year-old boys and accusing them of being terrorists? There have also been accusations of the Israeli military looting civilian homes. They are using innocent civilians as human shields to attack compounds of Palestinian authorities. They went as far as shooting journalists and also not allowing them to go to certain areas to tell their story.I think that killing Arafat would just make the situation worse. What does Dr. Brook think the Arab Nations would do if the Israeli government kills Arafat? One thing is that there would be a lot more trouble in that region if that happens. My opinion is the Bush administration needs to think what they want to do in the region to bring peace and then pursue it. We are all against the suicide bombing, and I think it needs to stop. We all want to get peace on earth and to end terrorism. But killing Arafat is not the way to go. I am 100 percent with the U.S. government to track down suspected terrorists, such as Osama bin Ladin and his terrorist network, but accusing Arafat of being a terrorist and trying to kill him is not the right move.
